KUCHING, 21 FEBRUARY 2025 – Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) today launched Makeramai Makerspace, its new hub for creativity, collaboration, and innovation, located on the 4th floor of Plaza Merdeka Shopping Complex.

Makeramai Makerspace is a key facility within the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS) Sarawak Digital and Innovation Ecosystem Project, championed by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak through SDEC. Equipped with a diverse range of maker facilities not limited to electronic, design, and multimedia labs, the space serves as a community hub designed to foster a thriving maker ecosystem in Sarawak, enabling individuals with shared interests to build, create, learn, and innovate together.

The launching coincided with the closing ceremony of the 2nd annual Sarawak Digital STEM Demo Day which showcased Sarawak’s young innovative talent comprising 18 selected teams who are past champions of STEM programmes run by SDEC in 2024.

The Demo Day provided opportunities for these top talents from across Sarawak to demonstrate their innovative projects and know-how in STEM while in the running to win the prestigious Best of the Best Award.

With the objective to highlight the importance of STEM in driving the region’s digital economy agenda, the event also sought to inspire other students to pursue STEM, engage with the local community, foster cross-sector collaborations, and celebrate the spirit of innovation. Notable STEM programmes such as Science on Wheels, NASA Space Apps Sarawak, Junior Innovate, and the Young Innovators Challenge organised by SDEC and its STEM partners have collectively impacted over 19,000 students across Sarawak.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak YB Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn highlighted that the Demo Day reflects creativity, problem-solving skills, and technological advancement, all of which are key components in shaping a digital Sarawak.

He also said, the launch of Makeramai Makerspace today signified a meaningful advancement in the Sarawak Government’s vision to cultivate a dynamic and inclusive innovation ecosystem. He hoped that public and innovators, both locally and abroad, would maximise the facility.

“As we move forward, it is crucial that we continue to invest in strengthening the STEM capacity-building efforts, digital literacy, and innovation ecosystems. The Sarawak Government is committed to ensuring that our STEM talents remain competitive in the technology-driven future.

This can be done through the collective efforts of our students, educators, industry leaders, and policymakers. So let us work together, leverage our expertise, and create even greater opportunities for Sarawak’s youth in building a thriving innovation landscape,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the launching of the Makeramai Makerspace, SDEC Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani expressed his confidence that the space will become a thriving ecosystem that nurtures talent and empowers Sarawak’s future innovators.

“Makeramai Makerspace is a home for all, the inventors, entrepreneurs, and innovators. Strategically located in the heart of Kuching in Plaza Merdeka, this space is easily accessible for everyone, setting the very foundation for an inclusive and dynamic innovation environment.

Whether you’re a startup business founder, entrepreneur or even someone with a spark of curiousity, we encourage you to experience, create, experiment, and connect here at Makeramai. This is the right place to prototype your next big idea,” Morshidi commented.
